  • Citheronia regalis is a giant silk moth...though these don't actually produce silk, which is why it's better to go by their family name saturniidae. Citheronia regalis actually digs into the ground to pupate instead of building a cocoon, so...no silk.

There are over 2400 species of saturniid moths and each of them have this same life cycle. They stuff themselves with food during their caterpillar stage and then use their adult, flying stage only as a way to find a mate for the next generation.

I did not know that some caterpillars could STING YOU!!... I had a yellow one with black spikes fall on me which then made me freak out which then made me try to brush it off (bad idea by the way) it rolled down my neck and back, stinging me and gave me a serious allergic reaction. Kind of scared of caterpillars since then. These are things people should be teaching children- I was not warned. This happened when i was in my 20's it's a shame I used to love caterpillars.

If everything that isn't a butterfly is a moth, does that mean a caterpillar is a moth? Does that mean most caterpillars (which are moths) turn into moths (which are also moths), but some caterpillars (still moths) turn into butterflies (not moths)?

Thank you for showing the weird and wonderful creatures in our backyards. I have always been awed by nature, but the creatures you highlight inspire me to be a smarter human when it comes to protecting the Earth. It's not just about the large creatures. It's about all creatures.

I actually think that moth is arguably a prettier word than butterfly in English. But papillon and mariposa are very good words for butterfly in French and Spanish respectively. Incidentally some moths in French are Papillion de nuit. But others are la mite, which isn’t as good.

This weekend while hiking I saw a giant swallowtail caterpillar for the first time. They are amazing! They disguise themselves as bird poop on tree limbs. And when agitated or scared, they reach out these red antennas that have a liquid on them. The liquid isn't poisonous, but it has a terrible smell to it.
